Undated but likely started late 18th century and continued into the early 19th century: reference to Sir Horace Mann (1701-1786) on page 43; to observing of Meagre Soup in June 1784 on page 99; to the winter of 1789 on page 12; and to preserving oranges whole in March 1800 on page 189.
Includes additional sheets and slips (some folded) mounted, (in one case) tipped, or (on page 186) a recipe in French (translated on page 187) pinned in.
Bound in half calf with marbled boards.
Corner torn from another manuscript inserted between pp. 132-133; lower half of pages 139-140 cut out; mounted sheet removed from page 190 leaving hole in page 189; "Mince pies with meat for the family ..." loose between pp. 198-199.
Mostly cookery but includes recipes for wines, soaps, dyes, cement for china, medicines, etc.; includes also instructions for the management of pheasants, the fattening of ducklings, etc. Many of the recipes are attributed to named individuals; some include notations; some notations initialed: J.H.
