Note:"The challenge: rethink the way we design affordable living space in the city"--Flap of front cover.
"In 1992, the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh launched the new urban housing competition, seeking designs for new housing on a vacant hillside site in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood. The competition asked participants to generate designs for exciting, affordable housing that is particularly responsive to its urban and social context. The winning entry would receive the ultimate test--it would be built and put on the market. Response from the architectural community was overwhelming. More than 350 submissions were received from the United States and six foreign countries. This is a report on the competition and some of the provocative ideas it generated"--P. 1.
