Description
Summary:
The photographs appear to have been taken around 1905, in Zanzibar, Aden (Yemen), Johannesburg, Pretoria, Basutoland (Lesotho), Orange River Colony, Natal, and Swaziland, probably by an Anglican missionary or his family. Photographs include those of: a German ship (S.S. Koeber) anchored off Zanzibar, scenes below deck and of passengers landing, streets and people walking and sitting in Old Town, Zanzibar, traders, divers, and boats in Zanzibar, camel-drivers, strollers, boatmen, sail-makers and a funeral in Aden, the sultan's barge, a European road-mender, Basutoland mountains, hand-pushed cart in Bura, Swazi and Zulu women carrying loads, a crowd of Basotho at a race meeting on the King's Birthday in Basutoland, Basotho women working in the fields, daubing a hut and preparing breakfast, Swazi men sitting, a church used as a school, Basotho men herding cattle, St. Augustine's Mission in Modderpoort, Orange River Colony, "the only horse that did the whole journey--about 500 miles", the General Post Office and Pritchard Street, Johannesburg, Transvaal President Paul Kruger's official residence in Kerk Straat, Pretoria, the Raadzaal (parliament) in Kerk Street, Pretoria (incorrectly captioned "Law Courts"), Paul Kruger's grave, the mission cathedral in Zanzibar, ferns in Natal, and African huts. Also featured are Swazi knobkerries (iwisa), a stringed musical instrument (lighubu), and sleeping mats (licansi).
Note:Hand-assembled photo album containing 84 black/brown and white photographs. Brief captions in pencil beneath most photographs, though some appear incorrect (some "Zulus" are actually Swazis, and vice versa).
