Description
Summary:
This guide for teachers accompanies a selection of twenty stories for fourth to sixth graders (9-12 year olds) on the Chinese experience in the United States. It contains a study guide for each story, brief biographies of successful Chinese Americans, a bibliography, a chronology of Chinese American history, and a set of learning activities to be used in conjunction with the stories. Each study guide consists of a story summary, story objective and background, a vocabulary list, activity suggestions, and indicators of topics this story may have in common with others in the book. Aspects of many experiences cited in the reading selections are common to all Chinese Americans, and the teaching guide includes demographic information on Chinese throughout the U.S. The reading material, however, specifically emphasizes the role of the Chinese in the development of the American West, and relates to the contemporary situation in California. Similarly, the teaching guide focuses upon resources such as libraries, media and cultural centers, curriculum development centers, and bookstores, in the San Francisco Bay area. The learning activities presented include some specific to the San Francisco Chinese and others which would be relevant to the general Chinese American experience. (GC)
