520 |a This paper addresses health and social issues as well as other socioeconomic problems which affect the black family, and the development of appropriate policy and programs to deal with those problems. Data on infant mortality, life expectancy, maternal mortality, physician and dental visits, and some selected death rates from specific causes are provided to illustrate the state of health among blacks in America. Additional data are provided to show the consistency of unemployment, overrepresentation in low-paying jobs, and the continuous decrease in absolute income experienced by black families. It is argued that the problems faced by black families in these areas are the result of discrimination, racism, and selective employment practices. Suggestions are made for developing a community-based health care system that takes into account the socioeconomic problems of blacks and other minorities. (EB)
