520 |a This annotated resource guide contains information and learning activities on the Vietnam War for use by high school history teachers. Annotations of primary source materials, resource materials, textbooks, general interest books, and film and slide shows from several competing points of view are included. The developers believe that students who are exposed to the resources and activities will begin to understand that the realities of the Vietnam War are quite different from most textbook versions and, specifically, that the war was essentially a struggle between the United States and the people of Vietnam for control of South Vietnam and that the war effort was substantially constrained by a mass movement of protest within the United States and internationally. The review is organized topically in eight chapters: 1) Histories of the War, 2) The Land and People of Indochina, 3) United States Foreign Policy, 4) Vietnamese Liberation Movements, 5) G.I. Experiences, 6) The Antiwar Movement, 7) Impact of the War, and 8) Vietnam Since the War. Students are involved in a variety of activities related to each of these topics, including pre- and posttests to check knowledge before and after studying a unit, discussing issues in class, analyzing selected readings, constructing time lines, reading poetry by Vietnamese students, participating in opinion polls about the necessity of war, and brainstorming methods that were or could have been used by opponents of the war to bring it to an end. The document concludes with directories of organizations and publishers and suggestions for books for elementary school children. (DB)
