|a Spring Lake resident Margaret Oakes recalls her early life in the Tri-Cities area and speaks about extensive memories from childhood through early adulthood, including the history of family houses, pastimes and dating rituals, censored mail from the front lines of World War II, and her fifty years of sailing experience. She also recalls the story of her grandfather, William H. Buckley, who was the first person to have an appendectomy in Michigan in 1888. After high school in 1937, she worked as a service representative for the local telephone company. She was also president of the Free Bed Guild, which was started to maintain a bed at the hospital for those who could not afford it.
