She also recalls the story of her grandfather, William H. Buckley, who was the first person to have an appendectomy in Michigan in 1888. After high school in 1937, she worked as a service representative for the local telephone company. She was also president of the Free Bed Guild, which was started to maintain a bed at the hospital for those who could not afford it.
