|a "Making Connections" is an effort to improve the life chances of vulnerable children by strengthening their families and neighborhoods. It helps families raise healthy, confident, and successful children by tapping the skills, strengths, leadership, and resilience found in all neighborhoods. The first section, "Introduction," reviews key issues that provide direction and energy for the most promising approaches to school improvement. The next section, "Potential Requests, Opportunities, and Challenges," describes concerns and questions about school-related issues that are likely to be raised in all Making Connections cities and neighborhoods, emphasizing issues that neighborhood residents and leaders might raise about schools, trends and opportunities upon which sites can build, and challenges sites might face. The final section, "Promising Approaches and Resources," discusses strategies for building strong, community-responsive schools, focusing on accelerating the improvement of strong, publicly-funded schools (transforming existing public schools through school improvement and creating new schools in the neighborhood); strengthening linkages among school-family-community partners (involving families in school transformation and creating and fostering school-community partnerships that strengthen families and neighborhoods); increasing choice; and supporting systemic reforms. An appendix presents additional programs and organizations located in or near Making Connections sites. (SM)
