520 |a The author explores the history of Afro-Latino history, culture, and politics in the Americas, locating its origins in the invasion of the Iberian peninsula by African Muslims in the 8th century and noting how later Christian Portuguese and Spanish states used proximity to West Africa to develop trade which expanded the slave trade and plantation economies to Europe and throughout the Americas. La-ʱMontes traces the making of "Afroamerica" through the mass importation of Africans beginning in the early 16th century to the early nineteenth century. In their search for empowerment, the Afro-diasporic subjects who inhabited those worlds created a distinct cultural identity within the Ibero-American component of the Black Atlantic that might be called "Afroamerica" and "Afro-Latino/America" by means of their quotidian struggles and practical affirmations of memory, self, and culture, the author argues. The author surveys Afro-Latino history from the historical production of Afro-Latino America from the wars of independence to struggles for equal citizenship; the emergence of Afro-Latino politics and the rise of black expressive cultures; Latin-American populism, developmentalism, and discourses of mestizaje in the post-World War II environment; global movements and developments in Afro-Latino politics, identities, and cultures in the 1960s; to reconfigurations of Afro-Latino/America in the age of neoliberal globalization. Following the essay, a bibliography of recommended reading, a timeline of events from 711 to 2004, and a glossary are presented.
