Biographical Sketch:
In 1977, Spain held its first general election since 1936 – its 1812 Constitution having been suspended by Francisco Franco when he came to power in 1939. After four decades of Franco's dictatorship, democracy was restored by King Juan Carlos I, Franco’s successor. In 1978, the current constitution of Spain was enacted. The sovereignty power emanates from the people, so it's the very same people who give the king the power to reign over the country.
