Description
Summary:
For this historical spectacle, Griffith set the events of the old melodrama The Two Orphans in the French Revolution. Two orphans are separated by events and hurled into the frenzy of the revolutionary mobs in the streets of Paris. They are reunited only after one of them has been rescued from the guillotine in the typical Griffith last-minute race. The first half is crammed with a murder, kidnappings, orgies, duels, last-minute escapes, and the famous scene in which Lillian Gish hears her adopted blind sister singing as a beggar in the streets, but cannot reach her. The second half shows the Revolution itself, the masses surging into streets and squares, and Lillian Gish caught up by them against her will. In several shots the top and bottom of the screen are masked.
