Description
Summary:
In Atlanta: In May, Grant moved against Robert E. Lee and Richmond; Sherman attacked Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee and pushed for an equally critical goal: Atlanta. It was the beginning of the end. In Petersburg: See the soldiers toiling the mine shaft. Feel their horror in the wake of the explosion. Witness the rare participation of black troops. In Bentonville: In March 1865, the army of Union General William T. Sherman was advancing inexorably through the Carolinas. Confederate forces under Joseph E. Johnston prepared a trap for the Bluecoats near Bentonville, in a last desperate attempt to halt their destructive march. Concentrating on a portion of Sherman's army, Johnston had a good chance of success. Everything depended on a lightning strike, before Sherman could bring up reinforcements. In Appomattox: Escape was not possible. Lee knew the end had come and surrendered his valiant army at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
