Summary: |
An Irving Berlin musical tribute intended to boost morale during World War II. It honors the patriotic efforts of American soldiers during World Wars I and II. Berlin appears as himself, as does singer Kate Smith who delivers a rousing rendition of God bless America, for which she received the Congressional Gold Medal. Ronald Reagan stars as Johnny Jones, a son who follows in his father's show business footsteps. During World War I his father Jerry Jones staged an all-soldier show on Broadway called Yip yip Yaphank. Being a dancer and then wounded in the War, Jerry moves on to being a producer. In World War II his son Johnny Jones, who was his father's assistant, gets the order to stage a new show, called This is the army. His personal life is a bit of a struggle though, because he refuses to marry his fiancee until the war is over. |
