This film is based on the medieval legend of Pope Joan, a nun who disguised as a monk became Pope Leo's secretary. On his death, she was elected pope for a brief period in 855 A.D. When it was discovered she was a woman, she was assaulted by an angry crowd in front of the Lateran Palace.
