Summary:
Haydar, a Kurdish farmer in Turkey, receives a postcard from his cousin in Switzerland describing that country as paradise. He sells his animals and land for the journey and convinces his wife, Meryem, to leave Turkey. At the last moment, they decide to take along their son, Mehmet Ali. They pay smugglers to get them into Italy, where Mehmet Ali wins over a truck driver who drives them to the Swiss border. There they are rejected because they have no visas. With other Turkish people, they begin to walk across the Alps. They get lost in the snow. Finally, they are rescued but Mehmet Ali dies.
