Summary: |
Ellen Marie Johnson talks about her service as a nurse in charge of a hospital ward in France during World War One. She reads from her diary, written as she traveled to the Western Front by train and notes the scenery and towns she saw as she arrived at Château-Thierry. Johnson talks about her hospital, the food, the diseases and combat wounds she treated and says that they had to withhold letters to the soldiers because they grew despondent when they read about all of the flu deaths back in the States. She also talks about traveling to Germany with the occupation forces after Armistice Day and going AWOL to visit Paris. Johnson says that she remembers crying when she saw the Statue of Liberty upon her return to the U.S. |
