The Bessie Dean travel diary and ephemera contains a diary as well as letters, tickets, newspaper clippings, pressed flowers, and articles that were inserted in the diary by Bessie Dean. The diary recounts her travels through Europe from July 1890 through January 1891. Most of the ephemera was collected during her travels, but one newspaper clipping dates from after her return home.

Biographical Sketch:
Bessie Dean was born August 5, 1869 in Chicago, Illinois, to Thaddeus and Isabella Dean. Her father was a prominent lumberman and socialite. In 1894, she married Frederick Gardner. She died Aug 24, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, Wisconsin. From 1890-1891, Bessie along with her mother and sister-in-law traveled to Europe.
