Biographical Sketch:
Justo Hernandez was a labor educator who worked at Michigan State University, Labor Studies Center under the School of Labor and Industrial Relations, in The Union Minorities Leadership Training Project from 1981-1994. Hernandez was born in San Antonio Texas and with his family migrated for agricultural work and settled in Imlay City Michigan in 1962. As an adult, he worked for the Lee County Florida Housing Authority. He returned to Michigan in 1980 and worked with Michigan Economics for Human Development, a state-federal supported nonprofit corporation serving economically disadvantaged individuals and FHA on farm labor housing directing the implementation of the 24 unit housing development (Chapita Hills) under FHA. Hernandez brought Cesar E. Chavez to Michigan for several UFW grape and lettuce boycott events. He helped organize UFW marches in Michigan from the early 1970s – 1994.
