On the first leaf, there are two portraits of the album's compiler and his travel companions on board the "Eleonora Woermann," a passenger, freight and mail liner for German West Africa (on service in 1902-1915). The compiler was apparently a railway engineer, who surveyed the prospective route of the Central Line of the Cameroon Railway. The photos include a views of the colony's largest city and main port Duala: the residence of Rudolf Duala Manga Bell (Duala king in 1908-1914), district court, administration building, a bridge constructed by the Germans, street views, group portraits of the Hausa people, a dozen large well executed photos of a celebration of Emperor Wilhelm's birthday on the 27th of January, 1911 (scenes of military parade, horses and riders lined before the horse race, group portraits of the members of the native military regiment, African processions and dancers), several views of Duala harbor taken from the sea, interior of the cacao processing plant, a grove of cocao trees, and others. There are also photos of the colonial capital Buea showing the residence of Jesko Albert Eugen von Puttkamer (governor of German Cameroon in 1887-1906), Small Soppo village located nearby (in 1904-1914) the headquarters of the German colonial military forces "Schutztruppe"), forest and river views taken on the way to Ekona town, and others. Other images show Kribi (German government residences, Palaverhaus, German naval ships on the raid, "Kribi" (apparently, Lome) River, portraits of local chiefs, servant boys; Yaoundé (streets, nearby villages, Lobe waterfalls (300 kilometers southwest of Yaounde), portraits of local women and girls); Lolodorf and villages on the way from Kribi; Campo (photos of the locals, including a group portrait of missionaries with schoolboys); a beach in Londgi, the Lokundji River, the Nyong River; several scenes taken in local villages, including a "Palaver, Schane, 13.8.10", and others. A number of images picture meetings of the Germans with the local chiefs--possibly, in the course of negotiations over land grants for the prospective railway. There are also ten photos taken during a trip to Mount Manengouba, showing waterfalls near Bare, and mountain villages. About ten images show the construction of the Central Line (Mittellandbahn) of the Cameroon Railway from Duala to Widimenge on the Nyong River (started in 1909): five large images by Duala photographer O. Vetter (signed in negative or with ink stamps on verso) show the construction of the northern arm of the Edea railway bridge over the Sanaga River and a train near Yapoma; the others show the railway near Bonaberi, and "Yapoma Mittellandbahn." There are also original photos of Las Palmas and Tenerife, and color printed postcards with the views of Las Palmas (Canary Islands), Conakry (Guinea), Monrovia (Liberia), Sekondi and Accra (Gold Coast, modern-day Ghana), and Lome (Togo)."--Bookseller's description.
