520 |a "Album of thirty-nine original gelatin silver photographs showing infrastructure, fields and workers at cotton crop and sheep breeding operations along the Niger River, Mali. This album documents the cotton crops and sheep breeding by the French "Compagnie de Culture Cotonnière du Niger" in Diré, Sama and Dioro of the Niger Valley. The company, created in 1920 by Marcel Hirsch (Wikipedia), pursued experimental growing of various cotton and sheep varieties between 1921 and 1928 in order to determine the viability of crop irrigation and production of cotton and wool from the region. The album contains thirty-nine photographs that show the cotton fields, workers, newly formed canals, different types of cotton and breeds of sheep, and infrastructure. The vast majority show images of Diré, including the ginning factory, weather and soil observatories, the brick-making oven, and the water pump. One image shows a local worker metering the water in the canal. Two photographs show workers operating agricultural tools including a plow, and shovels dragged by cattle used for leveling the ground. Several photographs show a worker holding an animal, captioned with the species type, such as "A half-blood sheep." Four images show Sama, including one group photograph likely showing the French agricultural experts. One image shows a lime kiln in Dioro. A collection of very clear photographs that show the activities and extent of the company's cotton growing and sheep breeding operations in the region."--Bookseller's summary.

545 |a The Compagnie de culture cotonnière du Niger (CICONNIC) was founded in 1920 by Marcel Hirsch and focused on irrigated cotton production on the banks of the Niger at Dire. The French West Africa government originally gave CICONNIC 100,000 hectares of land, and later expanded the project to the nearby delta. CICONNIC relied on local governments to supply workers, and most of them were forced laborers. The company tried to entice more volunteer laborers by erecting a company store and allowing wives to live on the project, but this was met with minimal success. The company planted Egyptian cotton, and had minimal financial profits due mainly to managerial and labor problems. The company continued to struggle until, in 1928, the government reached an agreement with CICONNIC to transfer the company's assets to two new companies, Companie agricole et industrielle du Soudan and Compagnie d'élevage du Niger.
