520 |a In this installment of "Know your city," Dr. Willis Dunbar explores the treatment of African Americans in Kalamazoo. Dunbar summarizes the findings of a 1945 study carried out jointly by the Social Action Committee of the Kalamazoo County Council of Churches and the Council of Social Agencies under the supervision of the Fisk University Social Science Institute, focusing on employment demographics and housing conditions. In order to illustrate and elaborate on the findings of this report, three African Americans from around Kalamazoo speak about their experiences with employment and housing. John Reed, the secretary of the Council of Social Agencies, and Lee Roy Pettiford, Director of the Douglass Community Center, discuss the current conditions for African Americans in Kalamazoo and conclude that little has changed since the Fisk University report in 1945. Pauline Byrd Taylor, of the Citizen Council on Human Relations, speaks urgently about the need to take action and actively seek greater equality in Kalamazoo.
