Description
Summary:
Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) talks about his early years in Congress and meeting the late Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn. Inouye reminisces about his years as a part of the U.S. Army's 442nd Infantry Regiment in Italy during World War II where he was wounded and lost his right arm in combat. The Senator describes how he struggled with racial identity when he was younger, but says he was always an ardent supporter of the United States following the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan. Inouye recalls a moment after the war when he was denied a haircut because of his race, despite the fact that he was in his decorated, officer's uniform. The Senator says he was a supporter of the war in Vietnam until the events of the My Lai Massacre and racism toward Asian Americans began to resurface.
