545 |a Israel Shahak (April 28, 1933-July 2, 2001) was born in Warsaw, Poland, and was a survivor of the Holocaust. Shahak and his mother immigrated to Palestine after the camp liberations in 1945. Shahak became a professor of Chemistry at the Hebrew University and, after the 1967 war, became a leading Israeli voice of dissent. To draw attention to human rights abuses, Shahak translated articles from the mainstream Israeli press into English, published monthly in "From the Hebrew Press" through the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.
