The José Angel Gutiérrez collection on Albert Peña, Jr. consists primarily of research materials Gutiérrez gathered for his 2017 book on Albert Peña, Jr. published by Michigan State University Press, "Albert A. Peña Jr.: Dean of Chicano Politics." Among the collection includes oral history transcripts, photocopies of military records and other biographical documents, original and photocopies photographs, clippings, correspondence, speech transcripts and notes, and writings by and about Judge Albert Peña, Jr and others, including Gus Garcia, Lico Lopez, Rodolfo ("Rudy") Rosales, among others. Also included in the collection are newsletters and documents relating to the following organizations: SNAP, Inner City Advocates, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), SARCA, SW Council of La Raza, Para La Gente newsletter of the Chicano Defense Fund, and Political Association of Spanish Speaking Organizations (PASO).

Biographical Sketch:
Albert A. Peña (1917-2006) was born on the west side of San Antonio. A self-proclaimed "Chicano Activist," Judge Peña has been actively involved in a wide range of liberal social causes, particularly in defending and advancing the rights of Mexican-Americans, throughout his legal and political career. José Angel Gutiérrez (b. 1944) is an attorney and professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a leading Chicano activist and political leader in the 1960s and 1970s in Texas and also one of the co-founders of La Raza Unida political party that helped to raise public consciousness of Chicano civil rights issues.
