|a Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez delivers a talk entitled, "The massacre at Porvenir: justice be done now". Gutierrez describes an incident on January 27, 1918 in which a force of Texas Rangers executed 15 Mexicans in what has became known as the Porvenir Massacre. He explains the tensions that existed between the Texans and the Mexicans, and describes the details of the massacre. Gutierrez also talks about the investigation into the incident, the alleged complicity of the U.S. Army, the failure to indict, try, or convict the perpetrators and recent efforts to reopen the investigation. Gutierrez answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Dr. Rubén O. Martinez, director of the Julían Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University.
