Description
Summary:
Author and pastor Jeremiah Wright, Jr. was born on September 22, 1941 in Philadelphia. Wright completed six years of military service, earning four degrees: his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Howard University, his M.A. degree from the University of Chicago, and a D.Div. degree from United Theological College. In 1972, he became pastor of eighty-seven-member Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side, growing it to nearly 10,000 members. Combining a commitment to activism with a dedication to African American sermonic tradition, Wright used the pulpit to advocate African American issues, becoming a highly sought-after speaker nationally and internationally, with Ebony magazine naming him one of the top 15 American preachers. The recipient of numerous awards, including three honorary degrees, an accomplished musician and the author of numerous books, articles and sermons, Wright was Barack Obama's pastor until controversy arose about statements in some of his sermons.
