Civic activist, business executive and author E. Faye Williams was born December 20, 1941 in Melrose, Louisiana, one of nine children. Williams earned her B.S. degree in speech, English and dramatic arts from Grambling University; her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in public administration from the University of Southern California and UCLA; a J.D. degree from Howard University School of Law, and a D.Min. degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. The first African American to run a viable Louisiana congressional campaign in 1986, she narrowly missing victory by 6/10th of 1% after a mysterious "computer breakdown." As a peace and human rights activist, author, columnist, life member of Delta Sigma Theta and the NAACP, she was listed in Ebony Magazine as one of 100 most Influential Black Americans. As president and CEO of the National Congress of Black Women (NCBW), she helped organize the 1995 Million Man March. Williams was a Presidential Scholars Commissioner for President Barack Obama.
