520 |a Archivist Walter Hill, Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 22, 1949. Earning his B.A. degree in 1971 from the College of Wooster and his M.A. degree from Northern Illinois University in 1973, he earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland in 1988. He taught at St. Louis University, the University of Maryland and Howard University where he served as adjunct professor through 2008. As an historical archivist, in 1979, he worked at the Office of the Archivist of the United States. By 1990, he was director of the Modern Archives Institute, and he was senior archivist and subject area specialist at the National Archives. Hill published journal articles, including the Newsletter of the American Historical Association. He sat on multiple boards and was chief historian of the African American Civil War Museum. Hill passed away on July 29, 2008 at age 59.
