520 |a Historian Al- Tony Gilmore was born on June 26, 1946 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Gilmore received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in American History in 1968 and 1969, respectively, from North Carolina Central University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in American social history from the University of Toledo in 1972. In 1978, Gilmore was appointed professor of history and director of the University of Maryland, College Park Afro-American Studies Program. In 1986, Gilmore was named manager and senior program officer for leadership, training and development programs at National Education Association where he also served as historian. He was later named archivist emeritus. Gilmore wrote numerous works, including All The People: NEA's Legacy of Inclusion and Its Minority Presidents, A Biographical Directory of the Presidents and Executive Directors of NEA and the American Teachers Association, the introduction to The Negro in Sports, and Bad Nigger!: The National Impact of Jack Johnson.
