520 |a Historian John Hope Franklin was born in 1915, in Oklahoma. After graduating from high school in 1931, he attended Fisk University, and then Harvard University, where he obtained his A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in history. After teaching at several universities, Franklin wrote From Slavery to Freedom in 1945, while working at North Carolina Central University. He then taught at Howard University, before leaving to chair the history departments at Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago. At Duke University, Franklin was the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History. He served as president of the American Historical Association and several other organizations. He was also a life-long member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. In 1995, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1997, PBS aired a documentary on his life and works, First Person Singular: John Hope Franklin. Franklin passed away on March 25, 2009 at age 94.
