Nonprofit executive Fred Matthews III was born March 4, 1942 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Matthews graduated with his B.A. degree in sociology from Southern University in 1962 and served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. In 1966, Matthews began working in Chicago as the director of YMCA Youth Employment and Training Orientation Center. By 1971, he was promoted to district director. In 1985, as executive director of the Duncan YMCA, and developed programs to fight infant mortality and joblessness. He developed the Chernin Center for the Arts. In 1993, he was appointed vice president of community relations of the Metropolitan YMCA. Matthews was a member of several organizations, including the 100 Black Men, Inc., the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation, Operation PUSH, and the Grant Memorial A.M.E. Board of Trustees. In 2003, the YMCA opened the Fred Matthews III Senior Center in his honor after thirty-eight years with the YMCA.
