520 |a High school principal and civil rights activist Paul Joseph Adams, III was born on September 14, 1940 in Montgomery, Alabama. Adams obtained his B.A. degree from Alabama State University and then moved to Chicago, where he worked in mental health education while earning his M.A. in psychology from Northeastern Illinois University. In 1971, Adams was hired as director of guidance for Providence-St. Mel School, a Catholic high school, and was appointed school principal a year later. When the Chicago Archdiocese withdrew the school's funding in 1978, Adams led a national campaign to save Providence-St. Mel, which was successfully converted to an independent, non-profit institution. Adams, who served as president of Providence-St. Mel from 1996, has been credited with transforming the school into a premiere learning institution. Adams has received numerous awards for his efforts and was voted Man of the Year by the Chicago Urban League.
