After attending Western Kentucky University and Fisk University, Austin earned his Ph.D. from McMaster University in Canada in 1972. After working as a consultant and in a number of positions with the University of the District of Columbia, Austin was hired by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, where he served as program director for eight years. In 1997, Austin founded the Village Foundation. Its mission is to engage African American young men and boys in American society, by reconnecting them first to their local communities and then to the larger society. He is the co-author of Repairing the Breach with HistoryMaker Andrew Young. Austin has been recognized repeatedly for his work, with listings in Who's Who in Black America, Men of Achievement, and Outstanding Young Men of America, among others.
