520 |a Political and civic leader William Gray III was born on August 8, 1941 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gray received his B.A. degree in history from Franklin Marshall College in 1963, his M.Div. degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey in 1966, and his M.A. degree from Princeton University in 1970. He succeeded his father as pastor of Bright Hope Baptist Church in 1972. Elected to Congress in 1978 from Pennsylvania, Gray was an active member of the Congressional Black Caucus as chairman of the organization's budget committee. Gray wrote the sanctions on South Africa in 1985 and 1986. He was head of the United Negro College Fund in 1991 and the president's special advisor to Haiti from 1994 to 1995. Gray received the Medal of Honor from Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide. He served as vice chairman of the Pew Commission on Children and Foster Care. Gray passed away on July 1, 2013 at age 71.
