Powell graduated from Morris High School and the City College of New York, where he earned his B.S. degree in geology. He earned his M.B.A. from George Washington University. While in college, Powell participated in the ROTC program and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army for thirty-five years, fighting in the Vietnam War, and becoming a four-star general. Powell became a key aide to the Secretary of Defense and served as National Security Advisor to President Reagan in the 1980s. Between 1989 and 1993, Powell served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During this time, he oversaw twenty-eight crises including the Panama intervention of 1989 and Operation Desert Storm 1991's Persian Gulf War. On January 20, 2001, Powell became the 65th Secretary of State and the first African American to hold the position. | ||
