Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie was born on May 28, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. McKenzie graduated from Eastern High School in 1965. After graduating from Morgan State University, she worked for her family newspaper, The Afro-American. After a successful media career, McKenzie was ordained as a pastor in the A.M.E. Church in 1984. She went on to get her M.Div. degree from Howard University Divinity School in 1985 and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. In 2000, McKenzie was elected and consecrated as the 117th bishop of the A.M.E. Church at their General Council. She and Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry were the first two women A.M.E. bishops. In 2005, McKenzie again made history as the first woman to become titular head of the A.M.E. Church. She subsequently became presiding prelate of the 13th Episcopal District in Tennessee and Kentucky. She was a lifetime member of the NAACP.
