Biochemist and inventor Emmett W. Chappelle was born on October 25, 1925, in Phoenix, Arizona. Chappelle earned his B.S. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1950; his M.S. degree in biology from the University of Washington in 1954. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Italy. Chappelle worked with Meharry Medical College, the Research Institute for Advanced Studies, and Hazelton Laboratories before joining the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center in 1966. Using his research in bioluminescence- light produced by living organisms- Chappelle developed a test to find life on Mars, a way to detect bacteria in water, and improved environmental management. Chappelle holds fourteen United States patents for scientific inventions. He contributed to numerous scientific publications, producing more than 35 peer-reviewed scientific or technical publications. Chappelle received many honors for his work. He retired from NASA in 2001.
