Civil engineer and academic administrator Oliver McGee III was born on October 28, 1957 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University (OSU) in 1981 with his B.S. degree in civil engineering. McGee earned advanced degrees from the University of Arizona, receiving his M.S. degree in civil engineering and his Ph.D. degree in engineering mechanics and aerospace engineering in 1983 and 1988, respectively. In 1988, McGee began teaching at OSU as associate professor of civil engineering & engineering mechanics. He was promoted to full professor and chair of the Department of Civil Engineering & Geodetic Science in 2001. Howard University hired McGee as vice president for research and compliance in 2007. McGee published more than 50 academic papers and three books, including "Bridging the Black Research Gap" (2012). For his contributions, McGee was honored by numerous organizations, including the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the National Science Foundation.
