Summary:
Description: This item consists of letters sent to Martha Carey Thomas by Anna Howard Shaw, mostly discussing the progression of their suffrage campaigns, local elections, affairs of the Council of National Defence, and the prospect of war. In several letters Shaw laments the outlook as "fearful" stating in her letter of 11th March, 1918 "if Germany and Austria get their murderous hands on the food supply of the East we have many hard years of war before us and so much to leave and to do and to sacrifice". In latter letters Shaw also remarks on the return of Herald Thomas from military service and general views of American soldiers on their French, English and Australian comrades. Shaw also repeatedly relays her declining impression of Washington throughout these letters, describing it as a place where "all life has ebbed out" and where she feels "more alone...than almost anywhere else".
