Cicero quote in lower cartouche: "Quid ei potest videri magnum in rebus humanis, cui aeter nitas omnis totiusque mundi nota sit magnitudo. Cicero." [Who can consider human affairs to be great, when he comprehends the eternity and vastness of the entire world?].
Includes several sea monsters, a sailing ship and other decorative embellishments.
Shows conjectural Northwest and Northeast Passages, and a conjectural Antarctic landmass labeled "Terra Australis Nondum Cognita." South America is potato-shaped. The northwestern coast of North America is elongated, with regions labeled Anian and Quivira.
Text on Antarctic landmass: "Hanc continentem Australem, nonnulli Magellanicam regionem ab eius inuentore nuncupant." [This southern continent is by some called the Magellan region after its discoverer.].
Descriptive text in Spanish on verso titled: El orbe de la tierra.
Broecke: plate "Ort2," second state. Issued as plate 1 of atlas edition "1588 Spanish."
Shirley: Plate 2, state 2.
Text in lower left: "Noua Guinea, nuper inuenta que ̜an sit insula an pars continentis Australis incertum est." [New Guinea, recently discovered. Whether this is an island or part of the southern continent is uncertain.].
