[Who can consider human affairs to be great, when he comprehends the eternity and vastness of the entire world?]. Includes several sea monsters, a sailing ship and other decorative embellishments. Shows conjectural Northwest and Northeast Passages, and a conjectural Antarctic landmass labeled "Terra Australis Nondum Cognita." South America is potato-shaped. The northwestern coast of North America is elongated, with regions labeled Anian and Quivira. Text on Antarctic landmass: "Hanc continentem Australem, nonnulli Magellanicam regionem ab eius inuentore nuncupant." [This southern continent is by some called the Magellan region after its discoverer.]. Map was detached from a 1588 Spanish atlas, of which approximately 300 copies were printed: Theatro de la tierra universal de Abraham Ortelio, cosmographo del rey nuestro señor con sus declaraciones traduzidas d'el Latin.
