500 | |a "Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066. It ultimately resulted in the forced evacuation and incarceration of 110,000 Japanese Americans...more than half were children. The government used words like internment and relocation to describe what in reality was mass imprisonment in concentration camps. These Japanese Americans were, in fact, victims of wartime hysteria, racism, economic exploitation, and the failure of political leadership. Through a unique group experience facilitated by Dr. Satsuki Ina, a psychotherapist and a former internee, these now grown children trace their histories in order to heal from the lifetime trauma of this tragic chapter in American history. In our dedication to prevent this injustice from ever repeating itself, we bring to you the experiences of men and women who were "Children of the Camps"."--Opening frames.

520 | |a This film is a powerful documentary that portrays the lingering personal impact of the World War II internment experience on Japanese Americans who were children during their imprisonment. In this documentary six Japanese Americans who were incarcerated as children in the camps reveal their experiences, cultural and familial issues during incarceration, the long internalized grief and shame they felt and how this early trauma manifested itself in their adult lives. This program provides a rare glimpse into the very private lives of Japanese Americans who typically have not talked openly about the humiliation and trauma of the internment experience. It is an emotionally riveting piece that tells a disturbing story of racism in America, while highlighting the incredibly enduring strengths and cultural resources of the internees as they embark on a journey of healing.
