George Mitchell was born on 27 September 1923 in Madison County, Mississippi. He joined the USAAF and entered in April 1943. He served in the 8th Air Force during World War II. He was a Radioman/gunner in a B-24 with the 787th Bombardment Squadron, 466th Bombardment Group. He flew aboard the "Trouble Maker" and flew from Nov 1944 to the end of the war in Europe. He flew his first mission on 29 November 1944 and bombed Berlin on 23 March 1945. At the end of the war, he was in B-29 training in the United States and by October 1945 was discharged. He used the GI bill to go to school after the war.
