520 |a James Walsh, professor of Political Science at the University of Colorado, delivers a talk entitled, "Returning Irish America to its radical roots: reclaiming the dead miners of Leadville, Colorado." Walsh discusses his research on the unmarked graves of Irish miners in Leadville and how it led to his involvement in the construction of an Irish memorial in the town. Walsh states the memorial will commemorate various miner protests in Leadville, starting in 1880 when 5,000 miners walked out of the mines in protest of their three dollar a day wages, dangerous working conditions, and inability to unionize. Walsh highlights the variety of ethnic groups that participated in these protests alongside Irish Americans, but notes that Irish Americans were the primary leaders of the movement. Walsh expresses his hopes that the memorial will help Irish Americans reconnect with their heritage and restore the history that has been lost in Leadville. The event is convened by John P. Beck, Michigan State University professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
