He talks about how faith and hope informs his writing and activism work, and shares how as a student, he originally majored in biology but later transitioned into creative writing. Broaddus speaks of his start in the horror genre and how that was his genesis to work through rage and pain. He explains what Afrofuturism means to him and how it parallels his activism regarding oral history, community engagement, and teaching. Maurice states "Afrofuturism offers us a chance to see ourselves" and that the Zora Neale Hurston's scholarship and Afrofuturism tenets both promote living and creating an authentic self.
