520 | |a "This portrait of Senator Joseph McCarthy by the young lawyer closest to him in the heyday of 'McCarthyism' is an extraordinary mixture of the expected and the unexpected. McCarthy, says Cohn, had no special interest in or knowledge of Communism until he was approached in late 1949 by three men with an FBI study, obtained from the Pentagon, reporting on the subversive activities of State Department employees. McCarthy launched his crusade and immediately became the center of a world controversy. Cohn's close-up of the explosive senator from Wisconsin is fascinating, candid, fresh. He admired Joe McCarthy, his courage, and his commitment. But McCarthy's judgments were often hasty, his actions rash, his statements ill-considered, his research limited. Yet nowhere does Roy Cohn disagree with McCarthy's basic stand on Communism, repudiate the fundamental actions of the Wisconsin senator, or doubt the value of his anti-Communist crusade. Cohn on the Army-McCarthy hearings offers a stunning backstage view of the most garish public spectacle of our time. Through it parade the bewildered Secretary of the Army Robert T. Stevens, Senator Stuart ('Sanctimonious Stu') Symington, colorful Senator Everett Dirksen, and behind the scenes President Eisenhower, manipulating the anti-McCarthy forces and directing the campaign to destroy the Senator. In center spotlight is a man begrudgingly admired by both McCarthy and Cohn, Attorney Joseph Welch, 'a courtly gentleman with an old-fashioned grace of manner ... and an unerring sense for the jugular.' Cohn reveals here for the first time a secret agreement he made with Welch, an agreement which was broken by McCarthy and led to the unforgettable climax of the hearings. We have Cohn's and Schine's famous jaunt abroad to investigate the USIS libraries, 'a colossal mistake, ' McCarthy's own view of the Republican plot to destroy him, and the probing second thoughts of Roy Cohn, fourteen years later. Above all we have an intimate portrait of a public figure as hated, feared, and admired as any in American history, at the peak of his career and in his sad decline. 'He was a man of a peculiar time; the Cold War. ... The job he felt he had to do could hardly have been done by a gentle, tolerant spirit ... '"--Jacket. | ||
