It was on the way, even well on the way, at the time of the early and much to be lamented death of my fellow editor, Simon Price, to whose memory this volume is dedicated. The planning of the book, agreement with the Press, even the commissioning of the translations, were all under way before Simon died in 2011 - ten years ago now, as I write. It was conceived as a companion volume to one on the Imperial period which had already appeared in the same series, under the title The Religious History of the Roman Empire: Pagans, Jews and Christians.
