| Note: | The sale commenced on January 12, 1784, and continued to May 5. The celebrated La Vallière catalogue. "There is no catalogue of the eighteenth century, and perhaps not one of the nineteenth, which is so often quoted, which contains so much bibliographical information, and which comprises so extensive a collection of books of extraordinary rarity and interest ... the greater part of its contents is incorporated in the Bible of the bibliophile--Brunet's 'Manuel'."--R. C. Christie, Selected essays, 1902, page 279. The manuscripts are described by M. van Praet. The Catalogue of pt. 2, the larger but less valuable portion, was compiled by J.L. Nyon and published in 6 volumes, 1784; 2d edition, 1788. Sales of some of the Duke de La Vallière's books took place in 1767, 1772, 1777 and 1780. The 1767 catalog (in 2 volumes) was comp. by Guillaume François Debure; the 1772, 1777 and 1780 catalogs (each in 1 volume) by Guillaume Debure, compiler of the present catalog. |
