520 |a PART TWO - AGONY OF REFORM: Continues a review of the history of the global economy by examining the changes through the 1980's, during which the Cold War ended in the collapse of communism in Europe. Shows how the strategies of government planning failed to produce their intended economic results and were replaced in some cases by a rapid conversion to free-market capitalism, as modeled by Thatcher and Reagan. As privatization transferred economic power back into the hands of entrepreneurs, enterprise and exploitation both increased. Global wealth expanded unequally, creating new problems in economic regeneration.
520 |a PART ONE - BATTLE OF IDEAS: Recounts the history of the global economy in the first part of the 20th century. After the worldwide economic devastation of World War I, the great powers blamed the economic system for the exhaustion of resources, resulting in an intellectual and political struggle between the powers of government and the forces of the marketplace. Compares the influences of John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich von Hayek on capitalist economies. Points out the role of government planning in both the regulated capitalism of the U.S. and in the mixed economies of Europe as well as in communist countries. Points out the move to new political and economic policies based on Hayek's reliance on free markets after the recession of the 1970's and the leadership of Thatcher and Reagan. Interviews Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw, authors of the book Commanding Heights, as well as with many political, economic, and academic actors in the 20th century global economy.
520 |a PART THREE - NEW RULES OF THE GAME: Concludes a review of the history of the global economy by examining the rapid formation of a global market between 1992 and 2002. Political and economic turmoil in developing countries and new democracies turned out to have far-reaching effects, and the "Asian flu," which started with an economic meltdown in Thailand, soon reached Wall Street. Despite the objections of organized labor, both Republican and Democratic administrations favored free markets, while groups and individuals opposed to the harmful effects of globalization on the environment and on the poor, protested at meetings of the WTO, IMF, World Bank, and similar organizations. By 2001, the overheated U.S. economy slid into recession, pushed further down by the terrorist attacks of September 11.
