Part I deals generally with research into academic success and failure and includes: (1) selection and wastage; (2) selection, years spent in sixth form, and a Formula; (3) age and maturity; (4) other student variables, such as reasons students gave for failure; (5) factorial studies and motivation; (6) problems of Asian and other students; (7) resident and non-resident students; and (8) types of schools students attended before coming to a university. Part II is concerned with developing patterns of research and examines studies on: (1) teaching, staff-student relations, and values; (2) the criteria for examinations and pass rates; (3) professionalization; and (4) miscellaneous historical, sociological, economic, administrative, descriptive, and comparative studies. A lengthy bibliography is included, as well as a summary of a speech by C. Sanders outlining the problems of first-year failure in Australian universities and making proposals for further research.
