This annual directory lists all local agencies providing free public elementary and secondary education in the United States and its outlying areas. The listing includes all systems regardless of size, as well as nonoperating public school districts. The main body of the directory lists, in alphabetical order by State, the local public school systems, providing the following information for each system: name of unit, superintendent's location, ZIP code, county name, grade span, and enrollment. Also included are (1) summary tables showing the number of local public school systems and their distribution by size, grade span, and State; and (2) a listing of the names of the superintendents of the operating public school systems with 10,000 or more pupils.
